PEM’s History

During the past 30 years, PEM Plant Engineering and Maintenance magazine has evolved and kept pace with industry growth. The publication’s initial spirit, however, is the same today. We’re dedicated to making PEM the magazine you turn to first for trusted information.

PEM’s roots can be traced to 1977 with the launch of Industrial Management magazine. We then introduced a publication called Maintenance Management the following year. Industrial Management was published for senior management in Canadian manufacturing and Maintenance Management for facility managers.

Over time, a change in publication names and market direction led to the creation of PEM. The magazine’s editorial mandate was to raise the bar for maintenance and other plant professionals. Long-time editorial contributors Wilfred List and David Berger were just some of the familiar names back in PEM's earliest days.

Mission Statement

PEM is Canada’s total reliability magazine for industrial engineers, plant operations and maintenance professionals. Our mission is to provide readers on the shop floor with the information they need to increase manufacturing production and equipment uptime, integrate new technology, reduce operating costs, manage groups of skilled professionals in an industrial setting and encourage career development.

Industry Involvement

PEM is the only magazine in Canada that works with industry stakeholders to offer an awards program, which recognizes maintenance excellence. Past winners of the PEM Maintenance Awards include: Purolator Courier Ltd., Gennum Corp., Dofasco Inc., City of Toronto (Toronto Wastewater), Canadian Tire and the City of Mississauga.
PEM works closely with the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC) to hold MainTrain, Canada’s number one physical asset management conference. We also conduct industry surveys and help promote education initiatives on behalf of the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) and the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA).

Readers Top Priority

PEM is Canada’s total reliability magazine and the authoritative voice for plant operations, engineers and maintenance professionals. PEM has a loyal 100% request readership — more than 16,800 (Source: June 2009 BPA/CCAB Statement).

Embracing PEM’s rich history will enable us to create a better publication for readers and the industry we serve. As Canada’s total reliability magazine, PEM will continue to provide readers with information that’s vital to their day-to-day operations—in both print and electronic formats.

Here’s to our next 30 years!
