FROM THE EDITOR:
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the May edition of the PEM Plant Engineering and Maintenance e-newsletter. It has been a busy month for training and has featured the release of a number of white papers on issues as diverse as safety and direct drive technology. In this issue, we include a few highlights of those developments. Robert Robertson will just be returning from the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) conference when you receive this. Expect updates on the show on the PEM website soon.
The details for MainTrain and ENEX, two very valuable conferences for engineering and maintenance specialists, are being updated regularly. I invite you to check out what you can expect from this year's excellent line-up of speakers at both events.
Regards,
Rob Colman PEM, Online Editor

White Paper — Direct drive technology trends and its impact on gearmotor business
Energy savings, high efficiency and recycling are becoming increasingly important. However, with the current economic situation, businesses must weigh their options with gear drives that are typically used in most industrial applications — or opt for direct drive technology that has started to penetrate some markets. A new white paper from Sumitomo Drive Technologies discusses direct drive technology trends and investigates their potential impact on the gearmotor business.
