Make the right choice with lubricants
In the PEM
September issue, a special oil and lubricants report provides you with
a toolbox of helpful tips. For example, at the IMC 2006 Conference held
late last year in Daytona Beach, FL, U.S.-based lubrication trainer and
consultant Raymond Thibault, CLS, talked about why companies need to
use lubrication best practices.
According to Thibault, it’s all about the “rights of lubrication.” Key considerations include:
Right type
• OEM should be the primary source of lubricant recommendations along with the lube supplier; and
• Right viscosity grade is the most important factor.
Right amount
• Identify each point and the amount of lubricant to be added.
Right quality
• Quality standards need to be established and lubricants routinely checked.
Right place
• All lubrication points should be labelled with markers, stickers or tags.
Right time
• Re-lubrication intervals should be established based on the equipment type and criticality.
“Good
lubrication practices are essential to any asset management program.
Over or under lubricating equipment is the main cause of failures,”
said Thibault. “You want to develop lubrication scheduling through the
computerized maintenance management software (CMMS) system or other
electronic program. I also recommend that maintainers keep records of
lubrication activities.”

In the PEM September issue:
- PEM 2007 Salary Survey: This year, more than 500 respondents completed a comprehensive online questionnaire form—marking the largest total since the PEM
salary survey was introduced in 2004. How does your pay and raise
compare with industry peers? Read the salary survey to find out!
- Oil and Lubrication:
Top industry expert Ken Bannister leads off the special oil and
lubrication report with his article on lubrication practices. Smart
lubrication generates big results, and Ken will show you how. The
report also includes: the laws of lubrication—it starts with a good
lubrication system; avoid the high cost of micropitting by using the
right lubricant; and understanding the ABCs of viscosity.
- Health & Safety Asbestos
is a silent killer: maintainers making repairs or anyone else working
in a plant facility may encounter asbestos. It wraps around pipes and
elbows, it lines boilers and it's present in a host of ordinary
construction materials, including wallboard and ceiling tiles. This
helpful article shows maintenance professionals and other plant workers
how to properly handle asbestos.
