Canadian Tire and the City of Mississauga were named winners of the PEM 2006 Maintenance Awards. Now it's your turn to stand in the industry spotlight! Being named a winner of the awards offers many benefits. For example, the winning maintenance teams receive one free pass to the MainTrain 2007 conference in Toronto. They also receive cool prizes for the team, a plaque and a follow-up story in PEM. It's a win-win scenario all round. There's another advantage: you help to foster maintenance team goodwill and achievement. You can't put a price tag on that. Here's a good example. At the MainTrain 2006 conference in November, all 100+ members of the Canadian Tire maintenance team proudly rushed forward to accept their plaque with their manager (Ken Desloges). If you still need convincing, I'm sure the folks at Canadian Tire and the City of Mississauga will tell you that their involvement in the awards program was a positive and rewarding experience! PEM 2007 Maintenance Award Guidelines
We're now calling for PEM 2007 Maintenance Award submissions. Here are general guidelines for the awards:
• How big is your maintenance department? Tell us about your operating structure. • Why is your maintenance team better than the rest (i.e. quality, innovation and performance)? • Tell us about a maintenance team success story. • What kind of maintenance best practices and tools are you using and why? • How have you reduced asset management costs and improved equipment uptime? • What kind of return on investment (ROI), equipment reliability and production capacity improvements have been achieved? Submission Deadline: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2007
Email your submissions to PEM editor Robert Robertson: rrobertson@clbmedia.ca.

SKF supports the 2007 Gothia Cup Toronto—SKF Canada Ltd. held its annual “Media Day” last week here. Highlights of the event included the announcement of new deep-groove ball bearings and tapered-roller bearings, as well as the SKF Multilog DMX condition-monitoring system. In other news, SKF Canada is set to celebrate 90 years in Canada on July 20. Back in 1917, the first Canadian SKF office opened at 47 King St. W. in downtown Toronto. SKF Canada also will sponsor the Brampton East “Chiefs ‘92” at the Gothia Cup next month in Gothenburg, Sweden. Sponsored by SKF, the Gothia Cup is the world’s largest soccer tournament for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 19. The aim and direction of the one-week tournament is to create a meeting place for young people around the world—irrespective of religion, skin colour or cultural differences. “This year, almost 1,500 teams from 60 to 70 countries will participate in the Gothia Cup,” said SKF Canada president Jan Lindhe. “SKF Canada is committed to helping the Brampton East Chiefs realize the opportunity of travelling to Sweden and representing Canada in the 2007 Gothia Cup.”
2007 Canadian Fluid Power Challenge TORONTO-Judges at the seventh annual Canadian Fluid Power Challenge, held last month here, were pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of designs students used to solve this year's problem. The team of grade-eight students from Fern Avenue Public School won the 2007 competition, which was attended by gender-balanced teams from 15 west-Toronto middle schools. Students were asked to design and build fluid-power mechanisms to pick up a squash ball, place it into a hopper and remove it from the chute. They were evaluated on a number of criteria, including how many times they could repeat the cycle within a two-minute demonstration period, as well as how little material they used to build their devices. âWhen we set the problem, we think we know what most of the designs will look like,â says the event's facilitator Steve Rogers of Kidder-Technology Teaching Systems. âBut it never ceases to amaze me how many other designs these bright young minds come up with. And this year's students were a particularly creative group.â The Challenge is a partnership of the Canadian Fluid Power Association (CFPA), Kidder-Technology Teaching Systems and the Toronto District School Board. The CFPA's western chapter also holds a Challenge in Edmonton that involves both high school and middle school students. People & Companies Renold goes to China • Brantford, ON-based Renold Canada announced the acquisition of a 90 percent interest in the industrial chain manufacturing business of HangZhou ShanShui, which operates from a large production plant based in Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China. The business will be called Renold Hangzhou. Ivara names vice-president • Burlington, ON-based Ivara Corp. named Florian Lenders as vice-president of solution services. Lenders will be responsible for managing Ivara's reliability consultants, as they help customers implement and sustain a proactive approach to maintenance with the Ivara's reliability software. Goodyear introduces new belts • Toronto-based Goodyear Engineered Products introduced a comprehensive line of polyurethane timing belts for a wide range of applications, including linear motion, product conveyance and power transmission. The straight-tooth synchronous belts complement the company's industrial timing belt product lineup. "We now offer straight-tooth polyurethane, offset-tooth, or helical, polyurethane and rubber belts, to help our distributors grow their businesses as one-source suppliers," says Michael Lyons, marketing manager for Goodyear's industrial power transmission products. According to Lyons, the straight-tooth polyurethane belts can provide advantages over rubber and offset-tooth polyurethane synchronous belts in specific applications. "The new polyurethane belts are more resistant to cuts, tears, abrasions and flex fatigue; have a higher load-bearing capacity; are resistant to mould and ozone degradation; and can be colour coordinated to spec," he says. The steel-cord reinforced belts are supplied in three configurations: open-end rolls are available in 325-foot lengths; welded or jointed belts are made from roll material that's cut to length and spliced; and "endless" belts are manufactured using one long continuous cord with no splice or welding, providing additional cross-section strength. To combat corrosion, Kevlar cord belts also are available for high-humidity applications. Lyons says the polyurethane belts, available in a broad range of the most popular tooth pitches, accommodate a variety of industries and applications, including package handling, electronic component manufacturing, automatic sliding doors, vertical storage retrieval and power transmission. The belt-part numbering system provides easy cross-reference, as well as drop-in replacement, for existing competitors' specifications. "We're belting out a one, two, three punch with straight- and offset-tooth, as well as rubber power transmission belts," says Lyons.
