Watch for PEM's Salary Survey results

In the upcoming September issue, PEM will publish the results of its third-annual salary survey. The survey, which is a PEM exclusive, helps maintainers, engineers and plant operations to track their own salaries, raises and other compensation benefits against industry peers.

The survey receives solid support from PEM readers and this year is no different. Respondents took the time to fill out a comprehensive three-page survey questionnaire form. I want to thank the readers who participated in PEM's third annual salary survey. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Don't miss the PEM September issue! We'll include a complete salary survey report. Here are some early findings from the survey:

  • Average maintenance budget is 20.5% of the overall plant-operating budget.
  • Average plant size is 320,248 square feet.
  • Average plant employs almost 400 people.
  • Average maintenance department size is 37 people.
  • Top job changes over the past three years include: demands for higher productivity (30.6%); technical advancements (24.3%); and use of predictive maintenance (21.6%).
  • Top job challenges include: health and safety (49%); equipment downtime (47%); skills training (25%); and energy management (24%).

Cheers,

FLIR Systems introduces thermal-imaging camera

BOSTON–FLIR Systems, Inc. introduced the ThermaCAM P640 thermal-imaging camera. The P640 is suited for professional thermographers, infrared consultants, those working in the utility industry, or anyone needing to view small or distant targets with better thermal image detail and temperature measurement accuracy.

The new high-definition 640 x 480 detector in the P640 delivers 307,200 pixels versus 76,800 in an IR camera with a 320 x 240 detector. This is four times better resolution (16 times better than an infrared camera with a 160 x 120 detector), says the company. The P640's image quality also allows the professional thermographer to see much more image detail to help pinpoint or diagnose the nature of a problem.

The P640 features new interchangeable lenses that have been developed to further enhance the camera’s ability to capture distant targets in high detail or view close-up targets with a wide field of view. An eight-to-one continuous digital zoom allows the user to take full advantage of the camera’s high-definition image to pinpoint problems and understand their origin, says the company.

The new camera also includes an interchangeable 1.3 megapixel visual camera, a large, swivel-mount, 5.6-inch colour LCD, tilt-able viewfinder and a three-hour battery, all in a rugged lightweight magnesium package that weighs less than cameras with a fraction of the resolution and performance features, says the company.

Timken offers PdM help to Gallatin Steel

CANTON, OH–The Timken Company announced that Gallatin Steel, a flat-rolled carbon steel producer based in Ghent, Ky., avoided costly downtime in its rolling mill operations as a result of an emergency bearing repair and installation of a Timken predictive maintenance (PdM) program.

Recently, Gallatin Steel employees heard an unusual noise coming from a shaft on a rolling mill stand that was critical to the mill's productivity. With assistance from an on-site Timken representative, the noise was identified as a broken bearing cage, which was a result of high-speed and impact force upon a competitor's two-row tapered bearing.

To get the mill stand back into production as quickly as possible, the bearing, which had been in service since the plant opened 11 years ago, was removed and inspected, the cage was welded in the six places where it had fractured and the gearbox was re-assembled.

Timken also corrected the bearing clearance and made several other modifications to minimize any wear patterns that could occur after the assembly was mounted back in place. Since the re-installation in March, the bearing–with its repaired cage–has operated on the input pinion shaft with no problems.

To help Gallatin avoid future emergency repairs, Timken installed a StatusCheck condition-monitoring device on the bearing to measure overall vibration. StatusCheck, a wireless system that's designed to detect and monitor excessive levels of vibration and temperature, now alerts Gallatin's pulpit operator to vibration changes in the bearing, indicating potential bearing problems in the mill stand. The results can then be evaluated with Timken's on-site technical team and further diagnostic testing may be required to understand the severity of the situation.

"Timken is an integral part of our overall preventive and PdM programs and has played a valuable role in helping us identify potential problems before they actually became problems," says Don Daily, president of Gallatin Steel. "I can't say enough good things about the work Timken has done for Gallatin Steel, and I look forward to a long association with them."

In addition to StatusCheck, Timken has a broad offering of condition-monitoring products and services, including portable instruments, continuous-monitoring devices and online systems.
