PTDA announces new initiative partners
CHICAGO, IL.—The Power
Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) Foundation announced two
new partners in its workforce development initiative, the Industrial
Careers Pathway (ICP). The Canadian Fluid Power Association (CFPA) and
Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) have joined the Foundation’s effort
to address distributor and manufacturer needs for skilled workers.
The ICP objectives are to: recruit
entry-level employees to the industrial distribution channel; develop
programs to teach business, technical and distribution basics; and
create affordable resources for current employee development. At the
heart of the initiative are efforts to introduce an industrial
distribution curriculum at community colleges and technical schools in
the U.S. and Canada.
“The ICP program addresses some
long-standing needs of the Canadian fluid power industry,” says John
Bachmann, chair of the CFPA. “Our members are enthusiastic about the
prospect of technology graduates who are more business savvy. They also
look forward to the opportunity to upgrade the business knowledge and
selling skills of existing staff.”
According to Joan Cook, PTDA
Foundation executive director, the ultimate success of the ICP
initiative depends on broad-based support. “Reaching the necessary
critical mass of employers to support the program by hiring graduates,
offering co-ops and internships and sending current employees for
professional development is key,” says Cook. “The Foundation is proud
to welcome CFPA and PEI as partner associations.”
Including the two new partners, a
total of 21 associations and one regional development organization now
support the initiative spearheaded by the Foundation. In addition to
CFPA and PEI, supporters include:
- American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association;
- ASA Education Foundation;
- Association for High Technology Distribution
- Electrical Apparatus Service Association;
- Electro-Federation Canada;
- Fluid Power Distributors Association;
- Gases and Welding Distributors Association;
- Heating Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International;
- Industrial Supply Association;
- International Association of Plastics Distributors;
- International Sanitary Supply Association;
- NAHAD, The Association for Hose and Accessories Distribution;
- National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors;
- National Fastener Distributors Association;
- National Fluid Power Association;
- North American Horticultural Supply Association;
- Power Transmission Distributors Association;
- Safety Equipment Distributors Association;
- Security Hardware Distributors Association; and
- Greater Cleveland Partnership.

PTDA releases 2005-2006 Membership Directory
CHICAGO, IL—The Power Transmission
Distributors Association (PTDA) released its 2005-2006 Membership
Directory, which can be used as a resource to locate providers of all
types of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC)-related systems,

most recent contact information for all PTDA distributor members and
manufacturers of PT/MC products.
The compact and easy-to-use
format includes fold-out tabs to allow quick access to the three major
sections. A comprehensive alphabetical distributor listing includes
complete address, phone, fax, e-mail and web site; top executive
contacts; and number and location of branches and manufacturers' lines
represented by the firm. A manufacturer section includes complete

Saskatchewan mine selects Foxboro system
FOXBORO, MA—Cameco Corp., a
leading uranium producer, has selected Invensys Process Systems to
implement a Foxboro automation system at its Cigar Lake Mine in
Saskatchewan. The system will monitor and control all key mining
production operations at Cigar Lake, the world's largest undeveloped
high-grade uranium deposit.
The implementation includes the
latest I/A series V8.0 hardware and software, engineering services,
training, field services and Foxboro HART-based field instrumentation
for processes bid to date. The I/A series automation system for Cigar
Lake is highly distributed., says Invensys.
The newest generation I/A series
of family field-mounted control processors is being deployed at various
stages of the uranium mining process, having started with the shaft
concrete plant and freeze systems (ore body stabilization) plant, to be
followed by underground ore handling, grinding operations, slurry
load-out and wastewater treatment.
A variety of field I/O platforms
are being deployed, integrating HART combined analog and digital
signals with Ethernet and serial connections to third-party devices.
The I/A series system will also interface with Modicon PLC systems
using Foxboro's latest field device system integrator I/O modules.
The Cameco implementation of the
Foxboro control automation project is in two stages. The shaft concrete
plant and freeze systems are being implemented now for completion in
the fall. Automation for the balance of the Cigar Lake Mine operations
is projected to be completed in 2007.

Timken to hold bearing training classes
CANTON, OH—Timken will launch a
paper industry bearing training class in September. Held at Timken's
Tyger River facility in Union, SC, the class will help paper mills and
roll-shop operators reduce downtime and improve machine performance by
maximizing the efficiency of their mill's bearings.
"We're dedicated to improving our
customers' performance. By sharing our knowledge of friction
management, customers will get the greatest performance out of Timken
products," says Todd A. Thorsen, industry manager—forest products.
“Continuous improvement is a core value in the forest products industry.
"This training is an in depth look
at how mill operators can improve machine uptime through sound
maintenance of all types of bearings, including Timken tapered,
spherical and cylindrical products. The paper and forest products team
plans to extend the scope of this training to include more modules."
A combined schedule of
in-class and hands-on training covers every phase of bearing
performance in the mill—from pulp to finish. The training equips mill
operators to better understand how bearings are manufactured, removed,
installed, maintained, lubricated, inspected, repaired and analyzed.
Scheduled quarterly beginning in September, the two-day, fee-based training covers:
- Bearing fundamentals;
- Friction management solutions;
- Proper bearing care and handling;
- Bearing installation and removal;
- Measuring and assembly technique;
- Lubrication practices;
- Bearing damage analysis;
- Bearing repair; and
- Condition monitoring.
Timken's service and application
engineers and metallurgist from its forest products team will
facilitate the training. Class sizes are limited to 12-15 individuals
to allow personalized instruction.
"We recognize that bearings
in the hands of a trained operator become better products," says Rich
M. Miskell, senior service engineer. "With this in mind, the training
isn't manufacturer-specific. Rather, it heightens the operators'
knowledge and understanding of vital machine elements, so they're
reaping the benefits and not misusing them in any way—be it our product
or a competitor's."

Water-based urethane coating
Sherwin-Williams says its
Hydrogloss single-component, water-based urethane delivers VOC
compliance, but with the ease of application available only in
one-component coating. Formulated to provide a high-gloss finish with
outstanding interior and exterior colour and gloss retention, the
company says the urethane also resists yellowing. Hydrogloss is
recommended for use on water tanks, in power and petrochemical plants,
amusement parks, as well as bridge and highway construction.
